Hello everyone it has been a long time since I have posted. So I have made a promise to myself that I am going to be a lot more active, not straight away but starting slowly. It’s not hard to guess where I’ve been fishing lately and I have no intention of slowing down. I have had over a handful of different species and some in quantities and some of eating size.
Tip: Carry light on the pier as it’s a long walk to the 40 plus marks.
Week 1
As usual, my dad and I got to the pier for around 8:30 am after dropping my Mam off for work. the time it had taken us to walk the pier and get set up, it was 9 am before we got our first cast. It took some time getting our first bite but when it did come it was not as a surprise. Once again we caught codlin for around 30 cm both of us in our first cast so we thought we were off to a good start.
The First Of Many
Once we both had saved our blank, we got back to the fishing and it was great all day. After another 2 casts, i was into another fish. after reeling it in it turned out to be a hand sized flounder which put me ahead of my dad. No sooner than i had released my fish and watched it slowly swim away, i was almost hit by my dads line when he was into reeling in his 2nd fish of the day. It also turned out to be another flounder but of a larger size of 25 cm’s which beat mine by a mile. Unfortunately i was rushed to release these fish after it took time to release them due to swallowed hooks.
After a painful 2 hours and no fish showing in our court we decided to take a breather from staring at our rods and eat our lunch. You know, my Dad does this ting where he sometimes lights his cigarette or pours his coffee and when he’s halfway through it, he tends sometimes to get a bight and that he did. He told me he was in to a decent fish but I didn’t have faith due to the undersized fish showing up earlier on in the day. After a good few intense minutes it begin to surface in the water and it seamed to be another flounder until he got it up. It was a decent size fish and was not your ordinary flounder, in fact it was a 35.5 cm plaice which what seamed to be of a nice weight.
Catch Of The Day
It was now 12 o’clock and the fishing began to slow down and we were into our last hour of fishing. We went all out with baits and presentation. It did pay off with ” fish for me and 1 fish for my dad. I caught a small 20 cm Dab and a very large mackerel. My Dad reeled in yet another codlin to finish the scores off.
We met a nice fella who had cycled all the way from Heburn to the pier to fish and he couldn’t have been a nicer person to talk to. He was very friendly and a great person to talk to.
Bait Used
Once again we had some outstanding fresh Ragworm from Fraisers Fishing Tackle. Whilst we also used old Black Lugworm which and been defrosted for 1 week and the last bait we used was frozen crab which was never touched.

The Journey
After a busy half an hour drive, my dad and I got down to the pier car park for 8:30am last Wednesday. We ended up choosing the famous 44 mark as catch reports said it was producing some nice plaice. As you can probably guess, it was a short session due to the absolute opposite, The time I had dragged my dad along the pier and got set up, it was an astonishing 9:30 the time we wet our first line.
TIP: The Car park costs £3 in the summer to park all day.
Fish On!
The tide was on the turn so we didn’t expect to be able to fish it for too long. Upon the first cast my dad caught a nice codlin for a weight of about 1.5lb.
Small Codlin
After this fish we thought that we’d be in for an interesting day with signs of some nice fish being around. No sooner than I’d bait up and cast back out, my dad was onto another fish! When he was retrieving his fish, i didn’t quite know what it was on the surface of the water. Once the fish was landed it became clear what it was, A SMALL COLEY!
A Big Loss
By this time, the tide had already gone down by 2 metres so it was nearing lower water, we were constantly changing bait and recasting but no luck until, my dads rod doubled over with an outstanding knock. He began reeling it in and after 5 minutes of fighting what seamed to be a fish, it appeared to be snagged. I tried helping him for 15 minutes to get it out of the snags. But we had no choice other than to pull at it which resulted in the loss of whatever was on the end.
After that my dad lost 3 sets of gear and it was time we left and picked my mam up from work so that we did.
And yes you have read correctly, I did blank unfortunately.
Baits Used
Ragworm, Black Lugworm and Mackerel.
We got our bait from our local tackle shop which is Fraisers Fishing Tackle and it was outstanding with nice size worm in our buckets.
Worm of about 10inches. Absolutely Great bait.

I know I have not posted a catch report in a while as I have been ill on and off for a month or so, I got out fishing when I could and when I did it was St Peters Basin for two weeks. One week was good and the other wasn’t so good. So here it goes.
We first fished St Peter’s basin two weeks ago and the catch turned out great which you may have seen below. We started fishing not too long after 10am and it was low water. Immediately we seen that it was going to be a good day because we where catching very small codling no bigger than a few inches. But as the tide began to come in so did the fish my dad was the first one to be in which a half decent fish and it turned out to be the biggest fish of the day weighing in at just over 2lb.
There was a Portuguese fella who is very familiar with us who we speak to each week so we happily gave our fish to him as it was the first of the day. Next to have a nice fish was Graham, he too was into a nice fish which was also another codlin just over 1lb. It was safely returned to fight another day due to it being undersized. In between these couple of fish, small codlin where still being caught but next it was my turn, I too was into a codlin which weighed in at under 2lb but was still a nice fish.
Again!, to no surprise my dad was in again to another codlin once again under 2lb and no sooner than he had cast out his rod was knocking again! But this one felt different, once he reeled in, to his surprise he caught a whiting topping the scales at 2lb which was not expected due to the early catch. Now the tide had caught up with us and sooner than we knew it it was high tide. Nothing much was caught after this point and if it was it was quite dismal.
Well to be honest with you there’s not much to say for the following week. But we had a sharp start at 8am and it was a gorgeous sunrise. Three of us fished once again, me, my dad and graham. Surprise surprise, my dad was into the first fish of the day in his first cast! It was an impressive flatty weighing well over 2lb. And a promising catch for the day.
After a few casts, once again small codlin where being caught. But what a misleading sight. Graham too was into a flatfish coming in at just under 2lb. There’s really not much more to say apart from that the weather held out on us as you will se in the next pictures but all in all a great 2weeks fishing.
