Penn 525 Mag 2

Penn 525 mag 2

Having owned the Penn 525 for some time I decided to upgrade to the Penn 525
mag 2. Once out the box and down to the local beach, I was pleasantly surprised at
the appearance of my new `toy’. Upon opening the box I was struck by a gorgeous
gold side plate and star drag. Inside the box were Penn synthetic reel oil and
precision reel grease. The Penn 525 mag 2 is equipped with a multiple of pieces such as one-piece frame, aluminium spool, live spindle and so much more. This
reel has better looks and it feels much lighter than my old model.

The next thing that hit me was a ridged strip of gold in the centre of the spool allowing your knot to get more grip. The aluminium spool runs on a `live spindle’ allowing a `free float’ while casting. This means even better performance. It has a spool capable of holding 280 yards of 15lb mono perfect for the ultimate beach caster.

When I compared the beauty to the beast it was much different. The new Penn was much lighter and had a better sparky look to it.

The new star drag is fitted with a patented HT-100 versa drag and had a
clicking motion as it rotates which can be set to the anglers own preference.
Also it gave a much securer operation and much easier to set for the maximum
effect. Tuning my eyes to the other side of the cage there was a brand new
magnetic control system which moves a blanking plate over static magnet to
create the perfect amounts of braking. The new clicking motion on the mag
control gives the you a much more precise setting on the mags.Which gives you
much better control during cast.

Down to the true test- Heading to the beach and putting it to the max in the
fishing situation. I armed the spool with 18lb mono just short of the outer
ring on the spool served with 60lb shockleader. On both beach and rocks in a
different conditions and weather which gave me the perfect opportunity to
evaluate it’s potential.

So I headed down to the nearest beach and gave it a whirl. When I cast out only then I could realise the true beauty of the beast. I used a 5oz clipped Pennel and of I go. On my first cast, I surprised myself at the distance I achieved with the line peeling smoothly off the aluminium spool. A week after having the reel I went to the flat rock of Newbiggin. There I realised the true power of the Penn. I also found that the reel was a great all rounder. And defiantly the ideal reel for the beach angler who wants the all round experience. Even when reeling in the heavy fish through rock and kelp this reel takes great strain.

I enjoyed using my Penn 525, but I am now more than impressed by the new
model. The recommended retail price is £149.99, but by shopping around, it
should be possible to pick one up for less. This is my second Penn reel and it
certainly won’t be the last.

I would defiantly invest in buying another Penn as it has lasted me a
long time.
