St Peters Basin

St Peters eastern side

St Peters Basin is situated on the northern side of the Tyne and only 10 minutes drive from the city centre. The mark itself is on St Lawrence road, on the way into the marina itself. Although the road is a big stretch, there is certain positions that are more productive than others. The first mark you can see below is a personal favourite of mine, I favour it so much that I wont fish down there unless I can get on it.

Best Time To Fish: Dead on low water up until 2 hours after high water, any time after that is still productive but nowhere   near as good as on the flood.

Summer Species: With common eels and flounder being high on the agenda, it is not uncommon to catch the odd codlin    and whiting when the water is slightly more rough.

Winter Species: Winter fishing here is not much different to the summer, codlin and whiting can be found in large numbers on good days when it is overcast and cold, when the weather is a little warmer, expect to catch flounder of size and in numbers.

Ground: The ground here is very clear, but do be cautious as close in there is debris of rocks and other things, further out, is almost golden as there is nearly no snags until you begin drifting to the right, so be cautious on a strong tide and keep an eye on the line drag

Best baits: Funny enough, fresh bait isn’t always the best. During the summer months, ragworm and crab is a very productive bait whilst black lugworm and mackerel also being in the baitbox. In the winter months, I find that fresh lugworm and black lugworm being very productive, crab and ragworm still do catch but I find lugworm to be deadly. As I have mentioned, fresh bait is not always key, old ragworm is still a very good bait here and I myself have caught some nice fish on both fresh and older bait.

As I have mentioned, there is other marks down at the basin, one of them can be seen in the picture down below. I find that anywhere between the chair and the yellow marine hut is very productive and can be just as good as the eastern side. Back to the eastern side, only a short 100 yard walk along the footpath leads to an alcove, this spot has to be my second favourite as it has very very good shelter from the wind as there is large walls either side. But BEWARE, it is not recommended that you fish this side on a big tide over 4.5m as the tidal pull is tremendous and can lead to your line being pulled down the road. As for baits and ground, the baits I would recommend is exactly the same, although up to 20 yards out can be very snaggy so be careful when casting short distances.

Please be aware that the residents are very friendly and don’t mind anglers fishing here, so please keep noise to a minimum and use waste bins to dispose of any tackle and rubbish, thanks.

  2. Great to see a new sight that targets the Tyne, excellent piece on St peters, looking forward to seeing other marks keep up the good work

  3. be aware yacht users ‘require’ much more room than you expect and have a paticular blind spot for anglers!

    • I just started fishing there been a good few times now cought some nice cod and flattys if anyone has any good info best times to fish there would be greatful

      • Hey Ian, I tend to find 3 hours before high tide is when the fish start to bite, although on a sunny day flatfish go mad at low water at times. Tight lines.
